Europe
Europe’s digital identity market is entering a new phase as regulatory change, digital wallets and AI-driven fraud reshape the sector. Identity specialist IDnow has responded by launching its new Trust Platform, designed to move organisations beyond traditional onboarding checks and towards continuous identity assurance.
The company argues that one-time Know Your Customer (KYC) verification is no longer sufficient as businesses prepare for both the EU’s new Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) and mandatory acceptance of European Digital Identity Wallets from 2027. Instead, firms will need to continuously monitor risk, authentication and trust throughout the customer lifecycle. Malaysia
Malaysia
Malaysia is strengthening its national digital identity programme with new biometric safeguards for MyDigital ID.
The country’s National Security Council announced a series of security upgrades, including real-time facial biometric verification against the National Registration Department database during kiosk registration. Existing users will also be asked to complete periodic facial re-verification checks.
The move reflects growing concern about identity theft, fraud and cybercrime as Malaysia expands the use of digital services across government and the private sector. Authorities have positioned MyDigital ID as a cornerstone of the country’s broader digital trust and cybersecurity strategy.
Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to launch RDC-PASS, a national digital identity platform intended to provide citizens with a single digital identifier for government, financial and social services.
Backed by a reported $97.1 million investment, the project forms part of the country’s wider “DRC 2030 Digital Nation” strategy. The system will support biometric SIM registration, e-government access and electronic KYC services for financial institutions.
While officials see digital identity as critical national infrastructure, questions remain around data sovereignty and the role of Singapore-based technology partner Trident Digital Tech, which has been granted responsibility for the system under a 20-year agreement.
France
European digital identity consolidation continues with French digital trust provider iDAKTO acquiring cybersecurity and identity infrastructure specialist Stelau.
The deal strengthens iDAKTO’s position across the digital identity value chain, spanning enrolment, biometrics, authentication, digital wallets, electronic signatures and trust services. The combined company is positioning itself to capitalise on growing demand for EUDI Wallet and eIDAS 2.0 implementations across Europe.
The acquisition also highlights the increasing focus on digital sovereignty as European governments seek alternatives to non-European digital identity providers.
United States
Biometric identity specialist authID has expanded its Proof platform through a partnership with digital identity infrastructure provider Trinsic.
The integration enables organisations to verify users through more than 70 digital identity issuers and wallet providers across 50 countries, alongside support for more than 15,000 physical identity documents.

AuthID argues that widespread digital ID adoption remains hindered by fragmented standards, inconsistent assurance levels and privacy concerns. Its approach aims to combine global digital identity acceptance with biometric verification and privacy-preserving credential issuance through a single platform.
Global
Identity security is becoming increasingly complex for enterprises, according to new research from the FIDO Alliance.
The study found that while 94 percent of organisations believe they can revoke all physical and digital access within 24 hours when an employee leaves, more than a third have experienced failures doing so in the past two years.
The research also found that most organisations manage multiple identity systems simultaneously, while adoption of passkeys remains relatively limited despite widespread recognition of phishing-resistant authentication as a security priority.
Public sector organisations recorded the highest rate of identity-related security incidents among all sectors surveyed.
Estonia
Estonia is exploring what could become one of the world’s first formal digital identity frameworks for AI agents.
Under proposals backed by the country’s Eesti.ai advisory board, AI systems would be assigned their own digital identities, allowing them to act on behalf of individuals under clearly defined permissions and accountability structures.
The initiative aims to ensure that as AI agents take on more administrative and transactional tasks, there remains a clear record of who authorised those actions and who ultimately bears responsibility. Estonia says the approach could help avoid scenarios where individuals are forced to grant broad, unchecked authority to AI systems.
Europe
A new digital identity concept developed by Switzerland’s The Hashgraph Group and Italy’s Truesense seeks to bridge the gap between physical presence and digital credentials.
The companies have filed a patent for a system called Continuous Identity Trust Infrastructure (CITI), which combines ultra-wideband sensing technology with decentralised identifiers and verifiable credentials.
The platform is designed to prove not only who a person is, but that they were physically present in a specific location at a specific time, creating auditable digital credentials for use cases ranging from healthcare and smart cities to regulated industries. The approach aligns closely with Europe’s emerging digital identity and digital sovereignty agenda.
United Kingdom
Questions remain over how Britain will enforce proposed social media age restrictions for under-16s.
A report by The Times says communications regulator Ofcom has warned the government that while age verification is technically possible, significant practical, privacy and accessibility challenges remain.
Ofcom has called for greater clarity from government on how the proposed rules would work in practice and whether existing age assurance technologies can reliably deliver the required outcomes.
