Gartner predicts that at least a third of national governments and half of US states will offer citizens mobile-based identity wallets by 2024. But only a minority will be interoperable across sectors and jurisdictions. The scope and challenges for digital identity are quickly expanding as governments look to identity proofing, bring your own identity (BYOI), identity wallets, organization and objects identity, and identity ecosystems to ensure trusted and convenient access to services.
Singapore
Singapore’s Digital Government Exchange (DGX) Digital Identity Working Group (DIWG) has published a new report highlighting the efforts of eight countries towards the adoption of interoperable digital ID initiatives.
The document lists the accomplishments of an international working group led by Australia’s Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) and composed of digital ID experts from Australia, Canada, Finland, Israel, New Zealand, Singapore, the Netherlands, and the UK.
“The working group aims to develop pathways to enable mutually recognized and/or interoperable digital identities and infrastructure, to enhance trade opportunities in the context of a Free Trade Agreement or similar bi- or multilateral agreement,” the report reads.
The Maldives
The government is to establish a National Digital Identification System.
The decision was announced on Tuesday, following a meeting conducted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih with his Cabinet of Ministers.
The decision was reached following deliberations on a paper proposed on the matter by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology.
The decision to establish and adopt a National Digital Identification System comes under the administration’s National Resilience and Recovery Plan (NRR) 2020–2022.
The National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and the Department of National Registration (DNR) will jointly collaborate in developing and maintaining the system.

The system will enable authorities to adopt biometric technologies in DNRs’ identity management systems.
It will also pave way for the introduction of contactless identification cards.
The initiative will also see NICT and DNR developing digital identification applications for smartphones and extending the use of the digital identification platform to the private sector.
Australia
Australian company Data Zoo has announced the launch of IDUX, a digital identity solution designed to build mutual trust throughout the entire customer journey while guaranteeing end-to-end privacy and security.

Nigeria
The digital identity sector is set to add about seven per cent to the nation’s real Gross Domestic Product by 2030, according to a report by VerifyMe Nigeria.
The report titled, ‘Digital ID in Nigeria: State of the Industry,’ said the digital economy (information technology sector) contributed about 18 per cent to the GDP in the second quarter of 2021.
This, according to the report, is a testament to the government’s drive to promote a digital transformation agenda aimed at facilitating social and financial inclusion, economic development, and transaction transparency.
