The topic of digital identity has never been more relevant. It has been pushed to the forefront of the national debate over health passports and voter ID. This is set against a backdrop of government plans to introduce a digital ID system that aims to be “as trusted as using passports or bank statements.”

The THINK Digital Identity for Government event on May 21 will feature a host of experts speakers and panellist that will examine the most important issues facing public sector identity over the next 12 months.
Here are some highlights:
Martin Taylor, director, Digital Identity at Government Digital Service (GDS) will discuss the current state of play of digital identity for the whole economy and plans for future policy development of digital identity across the public sector as a whole.
We also discuss best digital identity practice, experience and learnings from identity experts across Europe and beyond. We will be hearing from identity professionals from various governments around the world to learn about their various experiences and enable us to get a wider perspective on the important identity issues for governments across the globe.
These include: Philip Lam, executive director of identity, US Government (GSA); Colin Wallis, executive director, Kantara Initiative; Sophie Ankarcrona Thelin, digital identity policy advisor, Ministry of Infrastructure, Government of Sweden, and Jonathan Thorpe, general manager for Digital Identity and myGov, Digital Transformation Agency, Australian Government.

Meanwhile, Cifas research has found three in every five cases of fraudulent conduct filed to the National Fraud Database relate to identity fraud. Most involve criminals impersonating innocent victims in order to set up new accounts and facilities. This not only impacts the organisation being targeted, but also the victim left in fear as to what else may be done in their name.
Sandra Peaston, director of research and development at Cifas, will discuss the trends and enablers of identity fraud, explore the potential impact of digital identities, and outline the standards for digital identity schemes recommended in the OIX fraud controls guide co-authored by Cifas.
Combatting fraud
“We are really pleased to have a full day of great content for our Digital Identity for Government conference,” said Matt Stanley, director of Think Digital Partners. “The overarching theme across the day is combatting fraud across the public sector with multiple session focusing on this.
“However, we also have great additional content including a keynote from the director of digital identity at GDS, Martyn Taylor; a fantastic panel session on how to best use attributes to create a citizen identity platform with expert speakers from the Scottish Government, DWP Digital and MoJ Digital.
“The conference also has an international feel with identity experts from governments in the US, Sweden and Australia offering insight into ID operations in their own countries, plus a session with Julia Glidden, Microsoft’s VP of worldwide public sector.”
