National Highways is extending IT and business consulting services firm CGI’s contract to support the delivery of its Data Architecture and Engineering programme.

National Highways manages a vast and complex digital ecosystem, with data sourced from roadside sensors, CCTV and smart motorway systems. The data assets collated by National Highways are valued at more than £60 billion and hold the potential to improve journeys, reduce disruption and support critical services such as freight and emergency response.

Over the next five years, CGI will work with National Highways to strengthen the organisation’s data foundations and deliver “more efficient, user-focused services.” This includes sharing real-time information on road closures and incidents via navigation platforms such as Google Maps and Waze, helping drivers plan their journeys and supporting more efficient freight movement, including time-critical deliveries like fresh produce.

As part of this contract, CGI will also continue to work on the National Highways’ digital platform, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of front-line teams, stakeholders and road users.

“Our data is one of our most valuable assets and plays a crucial role in how we operate and improve the network,” said Adam Locker, head of data architecture & engineering at National Highways.

“This next phase will help us use our operational data in a more meaningful and timely way, supporting better decision-making and helping us share useful information with drivers. Ultimately, we want to make journeys easier and ensure our network continues to meet the needs of road users.”

“Throughout England, more than four million journeys across 4,500 miles of motorways and major roads take place every day,” added Kevin O’Neill, SVP and business unit leader at CGI.

“With CGI helping to combine and improve access to disparate data sources, National Highways can significantly enhance the road experience, minimising disruption across the entire network and modernising a vital part of our transport ecosystem.”
