A new ‘Government Security Profession‘ career framework was published this month that explains pathways into the profession, and how to expand a civil servant’s skillset in Government Security Profession roles.

Presented in PDF format, the guide details a lot of useful information, including:

  • The ‘four dimensions’ of ‘Protective Security’ – Cyber, Physical, Personnel, Technical
  • how central government’s Cybersecurity workforce is a diverse community of over 11,500 security professionals that bring deep expertise and insight to manage and reduce security risks
  • that over 430,000 civil servants are protected by members of the profession
  • that nearly 8m square metres of government real estate has to be under members’ guard
  • and how the profession is made up of a number of National Technical Authorites such as the Centre for the Protection for National Infrastructure (CPNI), National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the National Authority for Counter-Eavesdropping (UK-NACE) and how they all provide expert advice to all levels of the Government Security Function.

The guidance then goes on to detail the strategic priorities of the body, which are said to be to:

  • Strengthening Cyber and Personnel security
  • Building an integrated security function
  • Managing security risk dynamically
  • Developing excellent shared security services
  • and Building a Government Security Profession.
