Philippines

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has launched a new digital identity service.

GSIS Digital ID has been designed to help automate processes, streamline services and amplify the customer service experience.

“The GSIS continuously strives to stay ahead and make it safer and more convenient for government workers to transact. We are not just launching a digital ID — this signals a new era where our members and pensioners can fully access our services easily through their smartphones,” said GSIS president and general manager Wick Veloso.

As of December 2023, 97 percent of GSIS loan transactions were processed electronically through kiosks and the GSIS Touch mobile app, with only three percent handled over the counter.

n April 2024, the GSIS said it was discontinuing the production of its Unified Multipurpose Identification (UMID) cards and eCards. Existing UMID and eCard users will continue to receive their benefits without interruption and new enrollees will reportedly receive ATM cards from their chosen bank (Land Bank or Union Bank) within five working days, which will be used for crediting benefits, loan proceeds and pensions.

Columbia

World ID orb verifications are now available in the Colombian cities of Bogotá and Medellín.

A central component of Worldcoin, World ID is “a digital humanness passport that enables individuals to securely prove they are a unique human for a growing number of applications.”

Users must be over 18 years old in order “to verify your World ID.”

The availability of World ID orb verifications in Colombia “comes just as new surveys show increasing support for proof of humanness both nationally and across Latin America.”

According to an April 2024 online/take home survey of Colombians Cifras y Conceptos for Worldcoin contributor Tools for Humanity (TFH), 71 percent of the people said they feel at least somewhat concerned that more convincing online bots will lead to greater levels of fraud and misinformation.

Sixty three percent said they feel concerned that AI models will make it increasingly difficult to distinguish between content created by humans and bots. Seventy percent of respondents said they have already used technologies that require biometric information

Lebanon

Lebanon has embarked on an ambitious journey to build its digital public infrastructure, with the aim of facilitating person-to-government transactions and reducing corruption, according to a blog post by the World Bank.

Championed by the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR) and approved in 2022, the 2020-2030 Lebanon Digital Transformation Strategy (DTS) “reflects the government’s commitment to digital development and outlines a long-term vision for digital transformation, including the prioritisation and implementation of reliable identify verification – namely digital ID and electronic signature capability.

“The DTS reflects the potential for digital transformation across multiple sectors of the Lebanese government and economy, which is primarily dependent on the establishment of the foundational elements of a whole-of-government DPI architecture.

“Core building blocks for DPI include interoperability standards to allow seamless and secure data sharing, reliable identity verification as provided by digital identity and e-signature technology, as well as robust data governance and data protection frameworks.”

Germany

Health insurance provider AOK has commissioned T-Systems to provide and manage secure digital identities (GesundheitsID) for its 27 million AOK policyholders. In future, the GesundheitsID will be the key to all digital services offered by AOK – from the electronic patient file (ePA) to the e-prescription and the services of the online office ‘Meine AOK’.

The health ID developed by T-Systems in collaboration with the ID wallet provider Verimi should be available in spring 2025. The contract between AOK and T-Systems has a term of four years and can optionally be extended by a further four years. The digital identities already available from AOK, which have been in use since January 2024 for logging in to the electronic patient file ‘AOK Mein Leben’, will be transferred to the comprehensive access service for all AOK digital services at the beginning of 2025.

Global

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) said countries should sign up to the Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN) to align health checks for seamless verification across borders in preparation for the next global health crisis.

The GDHCN is operated by the World Health Organisation. WTTC president and CEO Julia Simpson said that to avoid a global tourism shutdown in the event of another pandemic, a unified plan including digital health passes should be established.

United States

Gen Digital, the company behind cybersecurity solutions such as Norton, Avast and Avira, has launched a digital identity app called Midy that relies on selfie biometrics from Onfido to verify users. The company is now making moves within the employment and education credentials space, including an identity verification pilot programme with Accenture.

The pilot program is targeted at employee onboarding and will help human resources (HR) teams verify candidates within seconds, according to the firm. Aside from Midy, the pilot includes Accenture’s Verifiable Credentials Portal, which has been integrated into Workday, Accenture’s HR software platform.

Potential candidates can verify their identity through the digital ID app by obtaining digital credentials of their government-issued ID document and their college degree. Educational credentials can be obtained from the National Student Clearinghouse, a platform for education and workforce data that draws information from over 3,500 North American universities.

Global

SmartSearch, UK provider of digital compliance and anti-money laundering (AML) solutions has launched its International Individual Check solution.

The solution enables SmartSearch customers to perform identity verification checks for individuals residing internationally in more than 40 countries, using extensive data coverage from more than 200 global sources.

SmartSearch has partnered with the London Stock Exchange Group’s (LSEG) Risk Intelligence service to introduce the solution. This enables SmartSearch’s digital compliance platform to cross-reference customer provided information on an individual’s identity (name, address, date of birth, national ID) against LSEG’s database comprising data from global sources. These sources include local and regional governments, credit agencies, telecom providers, and utility companies.

Global

iProov said its Dynamic Liveness Solution, the science powering the iProov Biometric Solution Suite’s Remote Onboarding and Authentication solutions, is the first to achieve the new global certification on face biometric identity verification from the FIDO Alliance.

The certification assesses the performance and usability of remote identity verification systems based on facial biometrics.

In a process conducted by Ingenium Biometrics, a FIDO face verification accredited lab, which consisted of 10,000 tests, iProov’s Dynamic Liveness achieved a flawless success record with no attacks passing the system. iProov achieved a zero percent Imposter Attack Presentation Accept Rate (IAPAR), a 0.14 percent False Reject Rate (FRR).
